The Surprising Effects of Indoor Air Quality on our Health

indoor air quality

This year, amid a COVID pandemic and horrific air quality due to the fires in California, I’ve seen increasing numbers of clients suffering with their health. Many of them have been surprised by how much their indoor air has affected their health, and what a difference some simple improvements can make!

Improved health from fresher air

improving air quality

Jill* had a clenched jaw from years of grinding. I discovered that all the free radicals in the air were causing her jaw to grind. After discussing options to clear her indoor air, she chose to get the gemstone shungite (to soak up free radicals), and diffuse HOCL (a disinfectant that kills pathogens) to improve the air where she spent the most time. In response to fresher air, Jill stopped grinding, and found she had more energy, and her digestion improved. Plus she was sleeping better too!

Wanda* suffered from regular headaches and rashes. She lives in California where the air quality has lately often been unsafe, and the smoke from fires was regularly getting into her apartment. She chose to clean her indoor air by adding spider plants around the home and diffusing HOCL. Wanda loved the difference in freshness of her air, her headaches went away, and her rashes became less irritating.

Even though we can’t consciously smell or see it, our air quality is regularly being compromised by local and regional pollution, and even in air streams from other sides of the world!

So, where do pathogens come from?

Pathogens, like viruses and bacteria, and toxins can waft in through open windows and doors. They can hitch a ride on the underside of your shoes, your clothes, a visiting family member, or linger anywhere where there is moisture. I’ve even discovered that toxins from air pollution can accumulate in the grout between bricks!

the effects of mold in the home

I’ve picked up pathogens myself from a river while kayaking, and from dogs that came close in the park to say “hello”. Sometimes you must touch the pathogen to get it, but we can often get it from just breathing in.

Too often, my client Tracy* could not motivate herself to do anything. If she was able to work, she had no energy left for self-care. We discovered a direct correlation between poor air quality in her apartment, and the days she was without energy. It wasn’t until she installed high quality air filters in every room of her apartment, and diffused HOCL in doorways that Tracy noticed a profound difference in her ability to get things done!

I’ve had mold in my home, as have many of my clients. In addition to compromising one’s immune system, mold can also cause neurological and psychiatric issues. I now tell my clients that if there is mold present in their house, they will regularly have setbacks in their healing journey as mold is too often a primary barrier to healing. Read more on why we must get rid of mold in my article here.

Lessons learned

If you have a persistent problem with your health, consider looking into your immediate environment. Whether you can smell or see it or not, there could be a lurking toxin or pathogen that is sabotaging your health.  If you have toxins for pathogens in your environment, your body will need to detox regularly. To do this your body’s parasympathetic nervous system (also called the rest and digest system), becomes activated, thus can leave you feeling sluggish for much of your day. Plus without the constant barrage of bad air, your immune system can focus on healing. Most toxins do not smell toxic! Often they exist below your ability to sense them. You can get air quality monitors from Purple Air, test for mold with Immunolytics, or work with me to determine whether the problem is due to your environment, your immune system, or a condition you may not be currently aware of.
